Field Technician sorting mosquitoes to send to a lab for virus testing

Testing

Once the traps arrive at the lab, the mosquitoes are identified by species and counted. The species that have the potential to be a vector of a virus, such as West Nile Virus, are pooled into groups of 10-50, and sent to OSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for testing. Dead birds found that are suspected to be infected with West Nile Virus are also brought to the lab and are prepared for testing.
